Metro to get new-generation rakes by July

Metro Railway will receive its first pair of state-of-the-art air-conditioned rakes by July, 2016. These rakes are being built by Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai as per standards set by the Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO). With the arrival of these two, the Kolkata metro will have 16 AC rakes in its fleet apart from 13 non-AC ones. By the end of 2018, the metro is likely to receive 14 more AC rakes for which an order has been placed with CNR Dalian Locomotive & Rolling Stock Co Ltd in China

“The two rakes being built by ICF now are much more advanced than those in service. They will have 3-phase alternating current motors and features like regenerative braking for substantial energy saving, stainless steel body, disc brakes, better passenger information system and CCTV for passenger security. The existing AC rakes with the metro were also supplied by ICF but the new design is a challenge. With metros coming up in several cities in the country, there will be a high demand for rakes. If advanced rakes can be built in India, there will month longer be any need to import them,” a metro official said.

The Kolkata metro is different from those in other cities. This is the only metro network that depends entirely on an electrified third rail rather than overhead equipment (OHE). When the Kolkata metro was designed more than 30 years ago, technology hadn’t evolved sufficiently to dig tunnels large enough to accomodate OHE. The third rail was the only option. Today, when most metros draw power from the OHE, few rake manufacturers have retained the technology to build rakes that draw power from a third rail. As the north-south corridor of Metro Railway is third-rail dependent, all ongoing projects in Kolkata (save for the E-W Metro) will use the same technology for integration.

“We will need many more rakes as and when the ongoing projects are completed. Take the Kavi Subhas-Airport (via Rajarhat) link. This will form a circular link with the N-S corridor once the stretch between Noapara and the airport is completed. Once the integration happens, demand for rakes will go up. Units like ICF are gearing up for this. Within the next few years as the ongoing projects get completed, one would get to see more advanced rakes in the network,” the official added.

Railways engineers suggest private cabins with doors on AC coaches

With train passengers demanding more privacy at a premium, a group of engineers at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai has suggested that AC III tier and AC II tier coaches can have two cabins each with light-weight aluminium doors.

The railways has been removing curtains from AC III tier coaches to ensure cleanliness and to make the coaches fireproof. The ICF engineers’ suggestion was included in a paper submitted at a technical seminar of Indian Railways Technical Supervisors Association (IRSTA) on Tuesday.

IRSTA member K V Ramesh, who presented the paper, said ICF can provide cabins in coaches without making changes in the existing layout. It can be provided on sleeper class coaches also. “Berths in these cabins of AC II tier and AC III tier and sleeper class coaches can be charged an extra of 20%, 15% and 10%,” he said.

The design suggested in the seminar says two bays comprising eight berths in AC II tier and two bays comprising of 12 berths in AC III tier can be converted into cabins with doors.

A similar pattern has been suggested for sleeper class coaches. The arrangement would be convenient for families and people who travel in groups.

“Railways will be able to earn an additional 523.55 crore if these modifications are carried out and berths are charged at a premium of 14.2%,” the engineer said. The paper says the railways will be able to earn 115.01crore from AC II tier, 207.59 crore from AC III tier, and 198.97 crore from sleeper class.

The figures were arrived at as per the statistics of coaches available with railways as shown in railway sector statistics for 2015-16 in the working group report for the 12th Plan.

The paper suggested elimination of toilets at one end of chair car coaches to accommodate more seats. This space can be used for 12 additional seats.

A senior ICF official said the suggestion is workable. “We will study the proposal and it to the railway board. The factory can make the changes after getting approval from railway board and the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO).”

AC local for Mumbai just a few months away

The construction of the first air-conditioned local train for Mumbai is progressing at a brisk pace at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, with officials there telling dna that it should be ready to be sent to Mumbai in a couple of month’s time.

The first-ever pictures of the local shows the shell of the train completed as well a considerable part of the internal wiring. The vestibules of the coaches and sandwich flooring inside are also visible.

As first reported by dna, the air-conditioned train has its electrical systems supplied by Bharat Heavy Electricals under a Transfer of Technology (ToT) agreement with the Netherlands-based railway major Strukton Rolling Stock. The firm, based out of the Dutch city of Alblasserdam, has designed and manufactured the Traction Control (oversees the working of the electrical system), the all-important Train Control and Management System (TCMS) as well as electrical systems to power the train lighting, air-conditioning, on-board passenger services etc.

The air-conditioning itself will be a novelty on this train with Indian Railway opting for the most powerful mechanism in an Indian train. At 15 tonnes each, these air-conditioners- called Roof-Mounted Packaging Units (RMPU) in rail lingo- will be much more effective than the 10 tonne RMPUs- the highest on Indian Railways. It is currently installed in the newly built double-decker rakes and some trains of the Kolkata Metro. Most of the trains on Indian Railways, including the Rajdhani, have RMPUs of 7 tonnes, said officials.

These new features will, however, mean that the new rake, once it is sent to Mumbai, will have to be tested more extensively than other rakes. “It is a totally new product and chances of it being tested for upwards of three to four months cannot be ruled out. If that is the case, then there is a possibility that the train might be commissioned by the start of 2016,” said a senior railway official.

Mumbai’s first AC local could leave for Mumbai on October 2

// The strongest air-conditioning units in the Indian Railways — to be installed in the first AC local for Mumbai — have been given the provisional clearance by the railways’ apex technical authority. The move by the Research Design Standards Organisation (RDSO) will pave the way for the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai to fit two such units in a coach and then test it in real time.

The rake will have 24 units in all — two each for the 12 coaches — and once the trials for the first two are over, officials said, the other 22 units should be in by September.

As of now, railway officials told dna, the most likely date for the rake to leave ICF and move towards Mumbai is October 2, Gandhi Jayanti. However, officials added, they are trying to see if the turn-out — railway lingo for sending a new train to the end-user — can be done earlier.

“Apart from being of a higher category than AC units currently in use on the Indian Railways, these units will have some new designs in its compressor. These are things which will have to be tested thoroughly. Mumbai is a peculiar case because of the kind of crowds that use local trains during peak hours. The density per square metre can go up to 16 people. The air-conditioned rake has to be something unique,” said a railway official.

At 15 tonnes each, these air-conditioners called Roof-Mounted Packaging Units (RMPUs) in rail lingo — will be much more effective than the 10-tonne RMPUs, the highest on Indian Railways, installed in the newly-built double-decker rakes and some trains of the Kolkata Metro. Most of the trains on Indian Railways, including the Rajdhani, have RMPUs of seven tonnes, said officials.

Tonnage in air-conditioning
In air-conditioning, a ton is the cooling capacity or heat-removal capacity of an AC unit. One ton — written as 1 TR — means the cooling effect equivalent to convert one ton of water into ice at the same temperature. It is measured in terms of British Thermal Units (Btu) and a one-ton air conditioner is rated at 12,000 Btu per hour. A Btu is the mount of heat required to increase the temperature of a pint of water (which weighs exactly 16 ounces) by one degree Fahrenheit. Higher the tonnage of an AC, the greater its cooling capacity.

What’s expected from the 15-ton AC units
It must supply 0.14-metre cube of fresh air per person per minute.
Total fresh air supplied into the coach should be 70-metre cube per minute.
It should be able to work when the coach is crowded with up to 500 passengers.
It should bring relative humidity within a coach to about 60%.
It should be able to work when outside temperature is anything up to 40 degrees Celsius.
It should be able to work when train is travelling at 120 kmph.

ICF ready to supply coaches to Metro Rail for lesser price

The Integral Coach Factory (ICF), a unit of the Indian Railways is well-equipped to manufacture coaches for Metro Rail, but it is not allowed to participate in the tender process because of technical reasons, said Ashok K. Agarwal, ICF general manager.

“If we can supply coaches to Calcutta Metro why not to Chennai Metro? Moreover, we can manufacture coaches for a cost 30 to 40 per cent less than other companies,” he told The Hindu .

ICF has supplied 13 rakes (eight coaches each) of fully air-conditioned stainless steel body Metro coaches to Kolkata between 2011 and 2013, and has an order for manufacturing two more rakes with the latest three-phase insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) technology during the current production year.

Mr. Agarwal, who is also holding additional charge as general manager of the Southern Railways, said the ICF was not eligible to participate in the tender process, because it was only a coach builder and it depended on other companies like Bharat Heavy Electrical (BHEL) and MEDHA for electrics.

Since Calcutta Metro is run by Indian Railways, ICF was given the order to supply the coaches. In the case of Metro Rail companies in other cities, as they are PSUs and under global tenders, it was mandatory for a coaching factory to manufacture everything under one unit. The new Metro Rail projects are mostly funded by the World Bank or the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and they have a say in deciding the eligibility condition for the global tenders for coaches.

“This is the only reason preventing us from supplying coaches to other Metros, including Chennai Metro,” Mr. Agarwal said.

The ICF is also manufacturing luxury coaches on a par with international standards. The Golden Chariot, Palace on Wheels, Deccan Odyssey and the Maharaja’s Express are some of the luxury trains created in the ICF.

“It is only a question of money. Depending on the investment, we will manufacture coaches,” Mr. Agarwal said.

From Madras to the Mountains

The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Perambur has been asked by the Railway Board to design and manufacture 30 new coaches for the tourist attraction train, Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR), said General Manager Ashok K Agarwal. The popular NMR runs between Ooty and Conoor and is a huge draw. “The coaches used on the train are too old and Railway Board recently has instructed us. We will bring out 30 coaches from 2016-2018,” he said.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway was originally built in 1908 and has been operated using a Steam Locomotive. It passes through 26 kilometres, while crossing over 250 bridges along the steep uphill path. The uphill journey takes almost 5 hours.

In addition, ICF has also bagged a `250 crore Defence Ministry order to manufacture 40 AC two tier and 32 pantry coaches for use by the defence forces, Agarwal added. Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has given an order to manufacture two glass roof coaches to ICF to be used in Kashmir and the Araku valley for catering to tourists, Agarwal said. He also listed out other achievements and plans for the Railways’ production unit in the coming years. Better lavatories, bi-directional swing doors, coaches with mobile charging points and LED based lighting have been planned as improvements in train coaches and passenger safety.

ICF to produce over 360 LHB rail coaches in two years

Integral Coach Factory (ICF) plans to produce 67 stainless steel state-of-the-art Linke Holfmann Busch (LHB) high speed coaches this year and follow it up with another 300 in 2015-16, a top company official has said.

The production unit of Indian Railways manufacturing passenger coaches had for the first time produced three variants of LHB EOG shells during 2013-14, its General Manager Ashok K Agarwal said.

ICF produced a total of 1,662 general coaches last fiscal, registering its largest production in a financial year, he said, adding that the organisation has produced more than 49,000 coaches since its inception.

Referring to the green initiatives of the unit, he said ICF has rolled out one rake of environment friendly CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit).

In a significant step towards adopting green fuel, the Railway Minister had launched this ICF built CNG train by flagging off the train on the Rewari-Rohtak section of Northern Railway on January 14 this year, he added.
