Next month, the Indian Railways will launch exclusively third AC trains as part of a service for intercity, overnight travel on high-demand routes that seeks to offer more facilities than mail and express trains. The `Humsafar’ service is likely to be launched with a train between Delhi and Gorakhpur. A railways official said the fare for Humsafar trains, announced by Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu in this year’s budget, would not be over 20% higher than that for mail and express trains over the same routes.

Humsafar trains will be equipped with CCTV cam eras, GPS-based passenger information system, and mobile, laptop charging points with every berth, among other features.

Besides, the trains will also boast of better aesthetics, with a new interior and exterior colour scheme and the vinyl sheets similar to those used in the luxury Maharaja Express aimed at presenting a futuristic look. They will also have integrated braille displays.

“Since the train is a special class service with many modern facilities, it has cost the railways more. So, the fare will accordingly be on the higher side to meet the additional cost,“ said the official.
