Railway lounges to offer cosy comforts

10 Nov

Waiting for trains at the railway station is going to turn a pleasant experience with Railways all set to launch swanky executive lounges in stations.

Select stations will soon have executive lounges with state-of-the-art facilities, on the lines of lounges in airports.

Aimed at changing the passenger amenities offered at railway stations, passengers can make use of the facilities by paying a fee.

The first of the two proposed lounges in the State will come at the Thiruvananthapurm Central and Ernakulam Junction railway stations.

The old booking office at the Thiruvananthapuram Central station that has a mezzanine floor and the old parcel office in Ernakulam Junction have been identified for setting up the lounges.

The lounges, which will have a uniform design, will be set up and managed by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), a subsidiary of Railways.

Sent for approval

“The IRCTC has given the drawings and we had suggested some changes. The shortlisted designs have been forwarded to the railway headquarters for approval,” Divisional Railway Manager Sunil Bajpai told The Hindu here.

Facilities, including wash and change, Wi-Fi, TV, music channels, buffet services, newspaper-bookstand, luggage racks, shoe shiner, train information system and concierge services for pre-departure and post-arrival assistance for the passengers, are to be provided in the lounge.

Passengers staying beyond the initial period will have to pay additional money.

The IRCTC will pay 25 per cent of the revenue earned from the lounge to Indian Railways.

The success of a similar lounge set up in New Delhi railway station has prompted the Railways to go for more lounges.
