Madurai Railway Station will be one of the 19 railway stations in India boasting of an airport-like executive lounge by January or February 2016, according to the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).
The tenders for setting up these executive lounges, which will provide a string of facilities like wash and change, Wi-Fi, Internet, live TV, channel music, buffet services and newspaper/bookstand at affordable rates, have been floated by IRCTC.
The respective zonal railways from which the 19 stations have been selected have identified the space required for the lounges and IRCTC will be responsible for executing the facility.
The tenders will be finalised in October and the lounges will become functional early next year, said a statement from IRCTC.
Jaipur, Vijayawada, Agra Cantt, New Delhi, Kathgodam, Patna, Sealdah, Howrah, Bhubaneshwar, Vishakhapatnam, Ahmedabad, Puri, Nagpur, Bengaluru, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Lucknow and Gorakhpur are the other stations which will benefit from the facility in the first phase, the release added.
“The swanky executive lounges, which will be a state-of-the-art facility, can help train passengers recover from tiredness during the journey. Also, waiting for a train will no longer be an ordeal,” said Dr. A K Manocha, Chairman and Managing Director, IRCTC.
The executive lounges at 30 more stations, including Chennai Central, are likely to come up in a year’s time, the release stated.
