In what was termed as a first in the Indian Railways, the South Central Railway (SCR) on Friday commenced the run of its first Main Line Diesel Locomotive that uses a blend of traditional high speed diesel (95 per cent) with 5 per cent bio-diesel.
The introduction, which marks the beginning of regular usage of bio-diesel on main line locomotives on SCR, was fuelled by General Manager-SCR, P.K. Srivastava. Additional General Manager Umesh Singh inaugurated the bio-diesel facility at SCR’s Railway Consumer Depot. The senior officers termed it ‘the first firm step on the journey of finding cleaner, environment-friendly fuel’. The use of bio-diesel will not only bring down the dependency of Indian Railways on fossil fuel but also entail a substantial reduction in foreign exchange spent on procurement of HSD oil. It will also have the added benefit of earning carbon credits.
